Description

The original collage and acrylic work on paper work Green Landscape (2009) is part of a series of semi-abstract landscapes. The poet and writer Dominic Collier had wrote the following about Green landscape, when it appeared in Sam’s first one man show

“All of Chamberlain’s major interests and themes are present in this beautifully balanced and enigmatic composition, which inter-cuts and overlays wild abstraction with careful, skilled, reiterative articulation of the concepts of palimpsest and simulacrum. Against the incomplete void of a night-black backdrop, twin swathes of roughly splashed green vegetation give way through cunning vertical slashes – in the trees, in the canvas, in reality – to a papyrus hinterland. The jungle is alive with wriggling possibilities, the artist drawing the viewer’s eyes in and out through instinctive use of color, contrast and layering. The dual, butterfly structure of this painting is particularly interesting, and effective, setting up an intriguing and potent Yin/Yang relationship between left and right, while suggestions of book leaves, diminishing perspectives and event horizons are by the hovering spaceship/eye that bridges the spine or horizon or vanishing point that unites the two halves”
